Security during Load Shedding

Tip – Replace your alarm system batteries to ensure that they last throughout load shedding.  An 18 AMP hour battery is the best choice.  Two or more linked batteries is another option.  Your alarm activating at the beginning or end of load shedding indicates poor battery health which should not be ignored.  Unfortunately, load shedding damages batteries more quickly and under these conditions you should plan to replace your battery at least annually.

eThekwini Load Shedding

Tip – The Maytime SRA falls under Zone 8 for Load Shedding.  The EskomSePush App is a reliable tool for monitoring and planning around load shedding in our area.  eThekwini Municipalilty’s load shedding schedule can be found at the link below.

DSW

Tip – refuse collection for black (household refuse), blue (garden refuse), clear/orange (paper and plastic, can be mixed) and clear (glass and tin, can be mixed) bags is on a Monday for residents within the Maytime SRA.  All refuse and recycling bags must be put out on a Monday before 7am.  Bags put out late are not collected.  Recycling bags with non-recyclables or household waste inside are not collected.  Garden refuse put out in black bags is not collected.  Any bags not collected for the 3 reasons given above please could we ask that you then bring these bags back inside your property as soon as possible.  Please be aware that monkeys rip bags open and leave a mess.  A spray of ammonia solution on the bags should be a deterrent.  After the refuse has been collected, please pick up any mess monkeys might have left on your verge.  DSW supplies 26 black bags to each household every 3 months and 12 clear or orange bags to each household every 3 months.  Supply is erratic.

Complaints regarding DSW service, non-collection of your refuse or recycling or non-delivery of DSW black refuse bags or DSW orange recycling bags can be made via email dsw@durban.gov.za with your property address and complaint in the subject line or call 0313118841.  You will receive a fault reference number which can be followed up on.

Recycling

Tips – 1) glass and tin in one clear bag, 2) paper and plastic in another clear or orange bag, 3) all clean and dry, 4) ideally, only put out bags which are filled to capacity, 5) no household refuse or garden waste, 6) if there are non-recyclables in your recycling bags the contractor will not collect them, 7) DSW doesn’t collect polystyrene of any kind, 8) the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Recycling Centre www.khba.org.za/recycling-centre and the Pavillion Recycling Centre (depot behind the Pavillion Shopping Centre, Westville) www.thepav.co.za/green-building are alternative drop off sites for your recycling  9) keep educating yourself and your entire household on what is recyclable (the link below has an excellent visual summary which you can print out, and put up for the whole family).  10) keep up the recycling!

eThekwini Municipality Nuisance By-Laws

Tip – When all reasonable approaches and requests to neighbours, which is always the first and best way to start, have failed we suggest you familiarize yourself with eThekwini Municipality’s Nuisance By-Laws particularly Point 8, Noise By-Laws, to determine whether a noisy party, weekend construction or the incessant barking of your neighbour’s dog contravenes the eThekwini Municipality Noise By-Laws.  If so you can contact Metro Police on 031 361 0000 and report this.  You will receive an Incident Report number (IR) which can be followed up on if Metro Police don’t action your complaint.  Should numerous Incident Report numbers and linked video or audio, preferably date-stamped, evidence be collected and not actioned by Metro Police, you could escalate your complaint to our local Ward Councillor.

Insurance Discount Owing to Low Crime

Tip – You may receive discounts on home insurance as a result of the lower crime rates in the Maytime SRA.  Contact these local insurers to discuss.

Alien Invasives

Tip – Kloof Conservancy has excellent information on alien invasives in Kloof, particularly the worst offenders.  The Maytime SRA encourages residents to remove these species from their gardens.  The Maytime SRA groundsman identifies and clears alien invasives from common areas within the Maytime SRA footprint.

Nkonka Trust

Tip – Nkonka Trust is mandated to manage and restore approximately 50 hectares of open sourgrass land located at the very end of Haygarth Road.  We are very blessed to have this property adjoining our precinct and we encourage Maytime SRA residents to visit the site and enjoy the flora, animal and bird life of the Nkonka Trust as well as to show their support for the trustees in restoring and protecting this land.  Ways to get involved or make a donation can be found on the website.
